Proper water management starts with the analysis of the pool or spa
water. Tests such as pH and chlorine need to be performed on a
frequent or daily basis, depending upon the usage conditions. The
Chlorine test should be performed by a method that tests for Free
Chlorine, as it is the most important form. Tests such as chlorine
stabilizer, total alkalinity and calcium hardness are performed
occasionally during the season. Pool &
Spa water testers, for these common and routine tests are available, in
a variety of easy-to-use products!.
Occasionally, water quality issues arise that
require a more specialized test: one that is performed with less frequency
and, for which, test kits are less readily available or familiar. Tests
for heavy metals such as iron, manganese or copper should be performed, as a
means of determining the possible cause of water discoloration or a
surface staining problem. Tests for
nitrates and phosphates should be
performed, if there are instances of algae growth that seem unusual or, for
which, there is no apparent explanation.
Salt (sodium chloride) testing is
important, in addition to the other standard tests, if a salt chlorinator is being used.
Total Dissolved Solids
(TDS) testing can be important in very hard water situations, if a more obvious
explanation is lacking for poor water quality, cloudiness or scaling.
